He quickly took us to the perfect spot and set us up with rods, jigs, and the confidence to reel in some big catches. He was super friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to share his love of fishing with our group. Despite being seasoned fishermen and women, we didn't know the area well enough to find the best spots, but he made our day amazing! When we returned to shore, he promptly cleaned and bagged our catch, and shared a cold beverage with his wonderful wife and us." - kaviya

Alligator gar are the dinosaurs of our rivers - and they look the part. These prehistoric beasts can grow over 6 feet long and top 100 pounds. You'll find them in the deep bends of southern rivers, bayous, and backwaters. Late summer's your best bet, when hot, dry weather concentrates them in deeper pools. These ambush predators aren't picky eaters, but carp, buffalo, and shad make great bait. Rig a 5/0 to 6/0 treble hook below a bright bobber. Bowfishing's popular, but remember - it's a one-way trip for the fish. Rod and reel's more challenging, but gives you the option to release. When you hook one, hold on tight. These armor-plated monsters put up a brutal fight. One local trick: target areas where shallow flats drop into deeper water. That's where the big ones like to lurk. Just remember, in most places it's catch and release only for these ancient fish.

Atlantic herring might be small, but they're a big deal in these waters. Most run 8 to 15 inches long, swimming in massive schools that can cover miles. You'll find them offshore in depths of 30 to 300 feet, though they sometimes venture closer to shore during spawning season in late summer and early fall. That's when fishing really heats up. These little silver bullets are filter feeders, so don't expect much of a fight. But what they lack in sport, they make up for in numbers - you can catch them by the bucketload. Trawling's the most efficient method, but if you're set on rod and reel, try small hooks with bits of clam or squid. Fair warning: they can be picky eaters. The real draw here is the sheer volume you can catch and their versatility as food fish. Smoke 'em, pickle 'em, or use 'em for bait - herring are as useful as they come.

Black buffalo are the sneaky giants of our rivers. These freshwater bruisers can grow over 20 inches long and tip the scales at 30 pounds or more. Look for them in deep, fast-moving sections of big rivers and reservoirs. They love to hang out near the bottom, using their thick lips to root around for insects and mollusks. Spring is prime time, when they move into shallower tributaries to spawn. Catching one is tricky - they're known for being elusive. Your best bet is to use specialized bows and arrows at night in shallow water. If you're going the traditional route, try small hooks with worms or dough balls. Patience is key here. Black buffalo put up a heck of a fight when hooked, which is why anglers love the challenge. One local trick: Focus on areas with lots of vegetation during the spawn. That's where you'll find the big ones.

Ever seen a fish that looks like it melted? That's the blob sculpin for you. These deep-sea oddballs live way down at 1,600 to 9,200 feet. They're not exactly pretty - with big heads, tiny eyes, and fleshy bodies. Most are around a foot long, but the biggest can hit 28 inches and 20 pounds. Blob sculpins hang out on the ocean floor, waiting to ambush prey like worms and crabs. They're tough to catch since they live so deep, usually only coming up as bycatch when trawling for other fish. If you're dead set on landing one, you'll need heavy-duty deep drop gear - we're talking 80-130 pound line on big electric reels. Hook size 6/0 to 8/0 baited with shrimp or crab might do the trick. Just don't expect much of a fight or a meal - these weird-looking fish are more of a novelty than anything else.

California kingcroaker, also called corbina, are the surf zone specialists. These silvery-grey fish grow to about 28 inches and can weigh up to 8 pounds. You'll find them cruising the shallow waters of sandy beaches and bays, often in just a few inches of water. Summer and early fall are prime times to target them. What makes these fish fun is how they feed - they'll scoop up mouthfuls of sand, sifting out tasty critters with their gills. To catch 'em, use a high/low surf leader with size 2 to 4 hooks. Bait up with small strips of anchovy, mackerel, or bloodworms. Here's a pro tip: Cast out, then reel your line tight right away. You'll often feel them hit as soon as the bait settles. These fish put up a decent fight in the surf, and they're good eating too. Just remember, they've been declining since the 2000s, so practice catch and release when you can.
