Shared Offshore Adventure: Reel in the Big Ones

Ready for some serious rod-bending action? Hop aboard with Wilson Fishing Company for a shared offshore trip that'll have you battling bruisers and swapping fish tales in no time. This isn't your average day on the water - we're talking about heading out to where the big boys play. Whether you're a seasoned salt or just getting your sea legs, our experienced crew will put you on the fish and show you the ropes of offshore angling.

What to Expect on the Water

Our shared trip is perfect for small groups or solo anglers looking to split costs and make new fishing buddies. With room for up to 4 guests, you'll have plenty of elbow room to work those rails. We provide all the heavy-duty gear you'll need to tangle with offshore giants, but feel free to bring your own lucky rod if you prefer. The captain will pick the hot spots based on recent reports and conditions, so every trip is a custom-tailored adventure. Just remember, offshore fishing isn't for the faint of heart - come prepared for a workout and possibly some sporty seas!

Techniques That Land Lunkers

Offshore fishing is a whole different ballgame from inshore or lake angling. We'll be using a mix of techniques to target different species throughout the day. Expect to do some trolling with spreader bars and daisy chains for pelagics, bottom fishing with heavy jigs and cut bait for reef dwellers, and maybe even some kite fishing if conditions are right. Don't worry if you're new to these methods - our crew will walk you through each technique and help you perfect your skills. By the end of the day, you'll be working those deep-drop rigs like a pro.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Offshore waters are home to some of the most sought-after game fish out there. On our trips, we target a diverse range of species that'll test your skills and fill the fish box. Let's break down some of the top targets you might encounter:

Blob Sculpin: Don't let the name fool you - these deep-water dwellers are no joke. Found in the coldest, darkest parts of the ocean, blob sculpins are a rare and exciting catch. They're known for their gelatinous appearance and can grow up to 2 feet long. While not typically targeted for eating, landing one of these bizarre creatures is sure to be the highlight of any trip. Best time to target them is during winter months when they move to slightly shallower waters.

Black Buffalo: These freshwater bruisers are a favorite among anglers looking for a fight. Black buffalo can grow over 3 feet long and weigh up to 80 pounds. They're bottom feeders, so we'll be using heavy tackle and bait like dough balls or corn to entice them. Spring and early summer are prime times to target black buffalo as they move into shallower waters to spawn. Be ready for a serious battle when you hook into one of these powerhouses!

California Kingcroaker: Also known as the white seabass, these coastal predators are prized for both their fighting ability and table fare. They can grow up to 5 feet long and over 90 pounds, though most catches are in the 20-40 pound range. We'll be trolling or drifting live bait to target these silver beauties. Peak season is typically from May to September, but they can be caught year-round in some areas.

Atlantic Herring: While smaller than some of our other targets, Atlantic herring are a crucial part of the marine ecosystem and can provide non-stop action when you find a school. These silvery fish travel in massive schools and are often used as bait for larger predators. We might jig for them to use as live bait, or target them specifically if you're looking to fill the cooler with tasty, oily fish perfect for smoking or pickling. Best fishing is usually in the fall as they move closer to shore.

Alligator Gar: Now we're talking about prehistoric power! Alligator gar are living fossils, virtually unchanged for millions of years. These toothy giants can grow over 8 feet long and weigh more than 300 pounds. We'll be using heavy tackle and wire leaders to prevent bite-offs from their razor-sharp teeth. Alligator gar prefer warm water, so summer is prime time to target them. Landing one of these monsters is a true test of an angler's skill and strength - are you up for the challenge?

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

There's something special about heading out where the water turns that deep cobalt blue. It's not just about the fish - it's the whole experience. The anticipation as you leave the coast behind, the camaraderie with your fellow anglers, and the pure excitement when a reel starts screaming. Our shared trips offer the perfect mix of affordability and adventure. You'll have the chance to learn new techniques, make lasting memories, and maybe even set a personal best.

But let's be real - it's mostly about the fish. The variety of species we target means every trip is different. One day you might be battling a hard-fighting kingcroaker, the next you could be reeling up a bizarre blob sculpin from the depths. And there's always the chance of hooking into something truly massive like an alligator gar. It's this unpredictability that keeps our regulars coming back trip after trip.

Time to Book Your Spot

Ready to get in on the action? Our shared offshore trips fill up fast, especially during peak seasons. With a max of 4 guests per trip, you're guaranteed personal attention from our experienced crew. We provide all the gear, but meals aren't included so pack a lunch and plenty of snacks - trust me, you'll work up an appetite out there!

Whether you're looking to cross some bucket list species off your list, learn new offshore techniques, or just enjoy a day on the water with like-minded anglers, our shared trips deliver. Don't let another season pass you by - grab your spot on the rail and get ready for some serious offshore action. Book now and let Wilson Fishing Company show you why we're the go-to choice for anglers in the know. The big ones are waiting - are you ready to reel 'em in?

Meet the Species: What Makes Them Great

Alligator Gar

Alligator gar are the prehistoric beasts of our southern rivers. These monsters can grow over 6 feet long and top 100 pounds, with a mouth full of needle-sharp teeth. You'll find them in slow-moving rivers, bayous, and backwaters across the Gulf states. Late summer is prime time when hot, dry weather concentrates them in deep river bends. Anglers chase these fish for the thrill - they're powerful fighters and just plain cool to see up close. To target them, we'll use heavy tackle and big baits like whole carp or mullet. My best tip? Rig a 5/0 treble hook below a large, bright bobber. Be patient - these fish are wary. And remember, in most places it's catch and release only for these ancient fish. The real reward is in the experience of landing one of these living fossils.

Alligator Gar

Atlantic Herring

Atlantic herring are the small fry that keep our ocean ecosystems humming. These silvery fish, usually 8-15 inches long, school up by the millions offshore. You'll find them in depths of 30-300 feet, often coming closer to shore during spawning season in late summer and early fall. They're not typically a sport fishing target, but they're crucial as bait and for commercial operations. If you're set on catching some, we'll need to head way offshore and use small hooks or sabiki rigs. Trawling's the usual commercial method. These fish are most active at night, so that's when we'd have the best shot. While they're not known for putting up a fight, their importance to the food chain and their tasty, omega-3 rich meat make them worth pursuing for some anglers.

Atlantic Herring

Black Buffalo

Black buffalo are freshwater heavyweights, typically 20-30 inches long and 10-30 pounds. You'll find them in large rivers and reservoirs with strong currents. They're bottom feeders, using that distinctive snout and thick lips to root out insects and mollusks. Spring is prime time, as they move into shallower waters to spawn when temps hit the mid-60s. Anglers love 'em for their hard-fighting nature - they'll give you a real tussle on medium tackle. The challenge is hooking one, as they're notoriously picky eaters. My go-to rig is a small hook with a bit of nightcrawler, fished right on the bottom. Patience is key - these fish are wary, so a stealthy approach is crucial. While not known for table fare, their size and elusiveness make them a prized catch for many freshwater anglers.

Black Buffalo

Blob Sculpin

These deep-sea oddities are a real sight to behold. Averaging 12 inches but reaching up to 28 inches, blob sculpin live in the Pacific Ocean at extreme depths of 1,600 to 9,200 feet. They're ambush predators with huge mouths, waiting motionless to gulp down whatever swims by. The crazy part? When brought up from the depths, their bodies literally collapse from the pressure change, giving them that iconic "blob" look. We can't target these directly, but they sometimes turn up as bycatch when deep-dropping for grouper. If you're lucky enough to hook one, you'll need heavy-duty gear - think 80 to 130-pound line on big electric reels. They're not edible or sporty fighters, but landing one is a rare treat. My tip? Use large hooks baited with whole crustaceans if you want a shot at these bizarre bottom-dwellers.

Blob Sculpin

California Kingcroaker

California kingcroaker, also called corbina, are a surf angler's dream. These silvery fish, usually 10-20 inches long, hang out in the shallow surf zone along sandy beaches. They're most active in summer and fall, often feeding in just inches of water. Kingcroaker use that distinctive chin barbel to detect prey like sand crabs and small clams in the swash. Anglers love targeting them for their challenging nature and tasty meat. To catch one, you'll want to fish the incoming tide with light tackle. I always tell folks to look for "nervous" water - that's where these guys are stirring up sand looking for food. A high/low rig with size 4 hooks and small strips of anchovy works well. Cast just beyond the breakers and slowly retrieve, keeping your line tight to feel those subtle bites.
